"Our Flag... Our Land"

Nunavut - "our land" in the Inuktitut language - has been home to Inuit for millennia and part of Canada for more than a century. Today, the population of this Canadian Arctic territory is about 85% Inuit.

The indigenous people of Nunavut are properly referred to as "Inuk" (singular) or "Inuit" (plural). The term "Inuits" does not exist, and the term "Eskimo" is no longer used.

The Nunavut flag colors of blue and gold symbolize the riches of the land, sea and sky. Red is a reference to Canada and the inuksuk represents the stone monuments which guide people on the land and mark sacred and other special places.

The star is the Niqirtsuituq, the North Star - the traditional guide for navigation. It is also symbolic of the leadership of elders in the community.
