TITANIC'S DISTRESS SIGNALS
Distress signals sent from the ocean liner Titanic after it hit an iceberg in 1912 - including one that says, "WE HAVE STRUCK AN ICE BERG" - sold for $123,500 at auction.

MARINE DISTRESS SIGNALS
When a ship is in distress, these signals can be used to inform nearby vessels, aircraft and rescue craft of the position.

CODES USED BY POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS
Every police and fire department uses codes to limit the amount of time spent in conversing over the radio. Codes also allow for the quick exchange between the professionals pinning down quickly what the situation is and what is need to be done about it.

NAVAL SIGNAL FLAGS
These flags form an internationally recognised set of signals (intended for use by ships at sea). There are the usual flags for alphanumeric characters (26 letters, 10 numbers) but there are others.

SIGNAL FLAGS
The illustration below illustrates the flags used for the International Code of Signals, and additional flags currently in use by the U.S. Navy and apparently by the British Navy as well.

ANCIENT ROMAN SIGNALING SYSTEMS
On Hadrian's Wall an alphabetic system was used based on two groups of five flags, which allowed them to send messages letter by letter, and was similar to the system developed in England at the end of the eighteenth century.
